Lyuliang joins national fuel cell vehicle demonstration city cluster
Updated: 2025-04-15
Lyuliang has been approved to join the national fuel cell vehicle demonstration city cluster in Guangdong province, making it the only city in Shanxi to be selected for this national initiative. This milestone is significant for the high-quality development of Shanxi's hydrogen energy industry.
As a major national energy base, Lyuliang uses its strong coal chemical industry foundation and low-cost hydrogen production from coke oven gas to form an initial "gas-station-transport-vehicle-application" industry chain development system.
Lyuliang has issued a long-term development plan (2022-2035) and annual action plans outlining tasks, timelines, and roadmaps for the city's hydrogen industry development. By 2030, the city aims to achieve a hydrogen production capacity of over 500,000 metric tons and a fleet of more than 30,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles, with the total industry chain output value exceeding 100 billion yuan ($13.68 billion).
The city currently has a hydrogen production capacity of 76,000 tons, with 11 operational hydrogen refueling stations. Over 600 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and 500 hydrogen-electric shared bicycles are in service. A zero-carbon hydrogen heavy truck transport route from Lyuliang to Tianjin, spanning 760 kilometers, has also been launched.
Projects for an annual production line of 300,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and core components, 10,000 fuel cell stacks, and supporting membrane electrode assemblies are progressing rapidly.
China now has five national fuel cell vehicle demonstration city clusters, including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Zhengzhou. As the newest member of the Guangdong cluster, Lyuliang will promote the sustainable, scientific, and orderly development of China's fuel cell vehicle industry.
