Shanxi's 'three platforms' drive industrial development to new heights
Updated: 2025-09-01
Shanxi province is employing three key platforms – industrial chains, specialized towns, and industrial clusters – as core engines to nurture new quality productive forces, shape competitive advantages, and strengthen development capabilities.
The province has fostered 16 industrial chains in key sectors including special steel materials, new energy vehicles, and carbon-based new materials. A "geese formation" development model has been cultivated, consisting of 41 chain-leading enterprises, 102 core companies, and 289 specialized and innovative businesses.
Shanxi has developed a "24+128" provincial and municipal specialized town framework, directly or indirectly creating nearly 1.8 million jobs and the province as a pioneer in new industrialization. In 2024, the province's 16 key industrial chains and 18 specialized towns reported robust revenue growth of 16.2 percent and 13.9 percent, respectively, with emerging industries such as new materials seeing rapid growth.
To date, Shanxi has recognized 16 provincial-level small and medium-sized enterprise characteristic industrial clusters. Advanced materials and modern energy clusters have surpassed 300 billion yuan ($42.07 billion), while high-end equipment manufacturing, electronic information, modern consumer goods, and waste resource utilization clusters have reached 100 billion yuan. Emerging clusters in bio-manufacturing and the low-altitude economy are rapidly rising.
These three platforms are working in synergy to revitalize traditional industries, expand emerging sectors, and lay the groundwork for future industries, providing an inexhaustible source of new quality productive forces.
