Shanxi's R&D spending surpasses 30b yuan in 2024

According to the latest data released by the Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Statistics, the total spending on research and development (R&D) in Shanxi province reached 31.18 billion yuan ($4.38 billion) in 2024, marking a 4.6 percent increase from the previous year, ranking the province 20th nationwide in terms of total R&D expenditure.

The province's R&D intensity, defined as R&D expenditure as a percentage of GDP, climbed to 1.22 percent, up 0.08 percentage points from 2023, reaching the highest level since 2020. 

Enterprises, research institutions, and colleges and universities in Shanxi allocated 25.73 billion yuan, 3.27 billion yuan, and 2.13 billion yuan to R&D, respectively, with enterprise R&D spending rising by 3.3 percent compared to 2023, accounting for 82.5 percent of total R&D expenditure and thus playing a dominant role in the province's R&D landscape.

Research institutions saw a substantial increase in R&D spending, up 29.8 percent from 2023, representing 10.5 percent of the total R&D expenditure, an increase of 2.0 percentage points from the previous year. These institutions accounted for 55.3 percent of the overall R&D expenditure growth, a significant 45.2 percentage-point increase from 2023, underscoring their vital role in driving sustained growth in R&D investment in Shanxi.
