Shanxi delivers impressive opening-up results
Updated: 2025-11-14
Since the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Shanxi has been vigorously advancing both inland and coastal opening-up and integration into the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), establishing a comprehensive cooperation framework.
Over the past five years, the Shanxi Provincial Department of Commerce's "Thousand Enterprises, Hundred Exhibitions" initiative has supported companies in enhancing their international business capabilities by helping them participate in domestic and international exhibitions, obtain overseas trademark registrations, and develop global marketing networks. By 2024, the number of enterprises in Shanxi with import and export achievements reached 2,084, an increase of 485 from 2020.
Shanxi has also focused on attracting overseas enterprises, with the number of foreign-invested enterprises in the province growing from over 500 in 2020 to nearly 900 by the end of 2024. Additionally, 2024 marked the first time every county in the province had engaged in foreign trade, injecting new momentum into county-level development.
The province has steadfastly implemented a market diversification strategy, maintaining strong ties with traditional trade partners such as the European Union, the United States, Japan, and South Korea, while actively exploring emerging markets in ASEAN, Africa, and Latin America. Trade with BRI countries increased from 23.1 percent of total trade in 2020 to 50.2 percent in 2024, while trade with RCEP member countries rose from 26.1 percent to 31.1 percent, creating a more balanced global trade layout.
Shanxi is integrating into the global economic landscape, delivering impressive results during the 14th Five-Year Plan period and contributing "Shanxi wisdom" to the opening-up of inland regions nationwide.
