Shanxi integrates traditional culture into modern society
Updated: 2025-11-18
Shanxi province has long focused on the comprehensive protection of its historical and cultural heritage, emphasizing a strategy of prioritizing protection and revitalization. This approach aims to develop China's rich traditional culture, allowing it to shine in the modern era.
The province has implemented policies to strengthen the management and protection of world cultural heritage sites such as the Yungang Grottoes and Mount Wutai, and has completed the urgent restoration of Pingyao's ancient city walls. Shanxi's museum system is also becoming increasingly comprehensive, with 226 registered museums and memorial halls.
Shanxi has established a provincial-level system for recognizing and managing intangible cultural heritage (ICH) inheritors, and created a four-tiered ICH project directory at the national, provincial, city, and county levels. It currently boasts 182 national-level ICH projects and 198 national-level ICH inheritors, ranking third in China.
The province is actively exploring new integrated business models, such as "culture + tourism", "culture + technology", and "culture + education", that embed traditional culture into contemporary society. Digital restoration projects at sites such as the Yungang Grottoes and Tianlong Mountain have facilitated the "digital return" of artifacts lost overseas. Traditional festivals are celebrated with diverse activities, and various cultural creative products have become popular among young people, achieving both social and economic benefits.
To preserve and innovate cultural legacy, Shanxi plans to further deepen reforms in cultural systems, strengthen legal protections, expand talent pools, and stimulate public participation, contributing to the ongoing development of China's traditional culture.
