The Fenhe River Mainstream (Qingxu Section) Dike Top Road and Comprehensive Management Project, completed by a team from Taiyuan University of Technology in Shanxi province, has been selected for exhibition at the China Pavilion during the 2026 UIA World Congress of Architects in Barcelona, Spain.

Located in Qingxu county, the project spans 19.6 kilometers and covers an area of 189.82 hectares. Addressing issues such as sparse vegetation and damaged dike roads, the project team introduced three innovative strategies: constructing a 19.6-km continuous ecological corridor to improve saline-alkaline soils, and restore migratory bird pathways; reviving farmland ecological functions by introducing native tree species to form carbon-sequestering vegetation; and adhering to a sustainable management model with low human intervention and maintenance costs.

After five years of continuous efforts, the project has achieved remarkable results: the soil pH value dropped by 0.5, and salinity decreased by 30 percent. Plant diversity increased by 115 percent, and the number of migratory bird species rose to nearly 40. Annually, the project releases 15,000 metric tons of oxygen and has enhanced carbon sequestration capacity by 200 percent.

The project has transformed a once dirty and chaotic river corridor at the urban-rural interface into a multifunctional ecological space that blends rural charm with urban recreation. The upgraded dike top road now serves as an ecological landscape corridor, breathing new life into the riverside with swaying wildflowers and pleasant birdsong.
