Since the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), Shanxi's transport and communications industry has been driving its digital transformation, contributing significant "digital intelligence" to the province's high-quality development and comprehensive transformation.

As of July 2025, Shanxi boasts a total of 329,000 mobile communication base stations, an increase of 70,000 since the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20). Among these, 115,000 are 5G base stations. The province has achieved extensive mobile network coverage across 115 government centers, 163 4A-level and above tourist attractions, 151 transportation hubs, 107 higher education institutions, two urban metro lines, 15,000 elevators, and 3,400 underground parking lots.

Focusing on key sectors such as mining, coking, metallurgy, and equipment manufacturing, Shanxi has implemented 5G special networks, artificial intelligence, and flexible automation technologies. These advancements enable millisecond-level industrial data transmission, enhancing production efficiency and product quality while reducing labor and management costs.

In the field of smart healthcare, Shanxi's digital medical imaging cloud platform serves secondary and above public medical institutions, enabling cross-institutional and cross-regional sharing of medical imaging data.

In the smart cultural tourism sector, the province has launched various smart tourism products, such as 5G smart scenic spots and 5G+XR guides, offering immersive experiences at sites like the Yungang Grottoes and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, thereby improving management efficiency and visitor experiences.

Shanxi's transport and communications industry will continue advancing the new information infrastructure and promoting the integration of digital and real economies, reflecting Shanxi's role in advancing China's modernization.
