Shanxi drives low-carbon transformation with rise of green buildings
Updated: 2026-01-19
As a pioneer in China's energy transition, Shanxi province is spearheading a comprehensive green transformation in the housing and construction sector to achieve its "dual carbon" goals, with strides being made in developing green buildings.
Shanxi has enriched the concept and expanded the scope of these edifices, achieving the "14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25)" target of ensuring all new urban buildings are green a year ahead of schedule through policy support, standard enhancements, and exemplary projects.
Notable projects include the Taiyuan Wusu International Airport's near-zero carbon transportation model and the Xinyuan Smart Operations Headquarters A, which integrates near-zero energy consumption, 3-star green building, and AAA-level prefabrication standards. These have set benchmarks for innovative and sustainable construction practices. Moreover, the projects provide replicable models for the province's green building initiatives.
Shanxi has focused on enhancing the quality and efficiency of star-rated green buildings. It has become the first province in the nation to mandate that public buildings meet at least a one-star standard and super high-rise buildings meet a three-star standard. By strengthening construction supervision and operational evaluations, Shanxi ensures green building performance metrics meet the required standards.
Meanwhile, the proportion of star-rated green buildings in the province is steadily increasing, with all super high-rises meeting the highest domestic green standards. This year, Shanxi will continue to cultivate new growth drivers in the green building sector, advancing its standards and deepening the energy transition in the housing and construction sector.
