Shanxi achieves renewable energy generation milestone
Updated: 2026-01-21
Shanxi province achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy sector in 2025, generating 118 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 35 million households and a 26 percent increase over the previous year.
This renewable energy shift has also resulted in saving around 36 million metric tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 88 million tons.
The province added 16.91 million kilowatts of wind and solar power capacity to the grid in 2025, a 53.1 percent year-on-year increase. By the end of the year, Shanxi's total renewable energy installed capacity reached 78.81 million kW, accounting for nearly 50 percent of the province's total installed capacity, highlighting a rapid transition towards a green and low-carbon energy structure.
Shanxi's high-quality renewable energy development is supported by a robust power grid, with the State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Co completing and commissioning 26 renewable energy collection stations during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), supporting the connection of over 40 million kW of renewable energy.
State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Co also facilitated the participation of renewable energy in market trading, with market-based trading volume reaching 22.2 billion kWh, accounting for 18.8 percent of total renewable energy generation.
Shanxi plans to commence three new renewable energy collection station projects and commission four 500 kV collection stations this year, further enhancing the grid's capacity to accommodate renewable energy.
