In 2025, Shanxi reached a major milestone, with all six air quality indicators meeting national secondary standards for the first time. The "Clear Water into the Yellow River" ecological protection project was completed on schedule, raising the share of surface water bodies meeting national quality standards to 98.9 percent. Additionally, 3.41 million mu (227,333 hectares) of land were afforested. Together, these achievements represent Shanxi’s best ecological and environmental performance since records began.

This year, Shanxi will implement stronger air pollution control measures in the Fenhe Valley and Taiyuan Basin, focusing on key industries and critical periods. The province will advance land greening initiatives, cement achievements in sand prevention and control, and complete 2.6 million mu of forestation.

In addition, Shanxi will promote water-saving technologies to improve agricultural efficiency, cut industrial wastewater discharge, and reduce urban water losses. The province will also deepen its role in the national carbon peak pilot program and actively engage in the national carbon emissions trading market.

Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), Shanxi is committed to accelerating a comprehensive green transition in economic and social development, making a stronger contribution to the ecological security of the middle reaches of the Yellow River and the broader North China region.
