The Yungang Studies Research Alliance was established at Shanxi University on March 27. Led by Shanxi University, the alliance brings together 18 institutions, including the Yungang Research Institute and Shanxi Datong University, to address the challenge of fragmented research on the Yungang Grottoes.

The alliance seeks to build a collaborative innovation system that spans disciplines, institutions, and regions, establishing a leading national and internationally recognized hub for Yungang studies and talent development.

Li Jinbi, a senior inspector from the Shanxi Provincial Education Department, outlined the alliance's future direction, urging it to uphold academic integrity, target international frontiers, and produce landmark research outcomes.

He also highlighted the importance of talent cultivation, encouraging the alliance to develop an integrated training system for undergraduates, masters, and doctoral students. Additionally, Li called for deeper exchanges and cooperation to promote the international dissemination of research findings from Yungang studies.

Yu Zhenlong, deputy director of the Shanxi Cultural Relics Bureau, expressed hope that the alliance would focus on key issues such as the conservation and management of grotto relics and environmental monitoring through joint technical efforts.

He also encouraged the pursuit of significant academic achievements in major topics such as the history of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), the Sinicization of Buddhist art, and the exchange and mutual learning of civilizations. Furthermore, Yu advocated establishing mechanisms for resource sharing, talent interaction, collaborative problem-solving, and the shared use of research outcomes.
