Recent data from Tongcheng Travel's "2026 May Day Holiday Travel Trend Report" have revealed a significant surge in interest and bookings for Shanxi province's tourism products during the upcoming May Day holiday. The report highlights a 72 percent year-on-year increase in search and booking activity, with a notable rise in educational tours focused on ancient architecture.

The data indicate that bookings for county-level destinations in Shanxi have soared by 128 percent compared with last year, outpacing many provincial capitals. Notably, Pingyao county ranks sixth among the country's top 10 county-level tourism destinations known for cultural treasures.

More than half of the tourists visiting Shanxi during the holiday are from outside the province, with many coming from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Delta. Attractions such as the Jinci Museum and Shanxi Museum are drawing increased interest, with related guided tour services in high demand. Hotel bookings in Taiyuan have also risen by over 30 percent compared with the same period last year.

As a province rich in ancient architecture and educational resources, Shanxi has become a popular spring break destination for families. Tongcheng Travel's data shows a more than 40 percent increase in bookings for one-day tours that include the Yungang Grottoes, Xuankong Temple, and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda.

This trend suggests that tourists are becoming more interested in understanding the cultural significance of their destinations rather than simply viewing them. As families use Shanxi's ancient architecture as a dynamic classroom, the province is evolving into an "experience-rich destination" in cultural tourism.
