The China National Intellectual Property Administration announced 63 new geographical indication (GI) products on May 20, three of which are from Shanxi province – Jiaocheng jujube, Jiaocheng pear jujube, and Wanrong apple.

Geographical indications are a type of intellectual property that safeguard regional resources and promote the development of local industries. They play a crucial role in enhancing the market competitiveness of agricultural products and expanding income channels for farmers.

Jiaocheng jujubes and Jiaocheng pear jujubes are produced in the towns of Tianning, Xiajiaying, Xiying, and Xishe in Jiaocheng county. Wanrong apples are cultivated in 57 administrative villages, including those in Jiacun township and Wangxian township in Wanrong county.

Jiaocheng jujubes must be harvested when the fruit is half to fully red and free from mold and insect damage. It is picked with the stem intact. Jiaocheng pear jujubes are harvested at different stages depending on their intended use: half-red jujubes for storage, while crisp jujubes for fresh consumption and winemaking. Wanrong apples are required to have a standard shape and appearance, weigh between 220 to 350 grams, and be at least 90 percent colored.
