Shanxi steps up protection of Great Wall
Updated: 2026-06-09
Shanxi has introduced special regulations aimed at protecting the Great Wall sections within the province, enhancing the preservation and utilization of cultural relics, and ensuring the cultural heritage is both preserved for future generations and integrated into contemporary life.
The regulations emphasize the responsibilities of local governments, cultural relic authorities, and management units in safeguarding the Great Wall, while incorporating Great Wall protection efforts into development plans and fiscal budgets.
Maintenance and restoration efforts will prioritize the use of original materials and traditional craftsmanship, while modern technology will be applied judiciously. This approach aims to maintain the wall's integrity and historical appearance.
Additionally, historical architecture located along the Great Wall, such as ancient fortresses, villages, and buildings, will be more closely connected through themed tourism routes that allow visitors to not only view the Great Wall from a distance but also explore it up close.
A province-wide digital archive will be established to document and showcase Great Wall heritage sites across the province. Advanced technologies such as satellite remote sensing, big data monitoring, and drone surveillance will facilitate continuous inspection, enabling timely detection and resolution of problems.
The province will also appoint Great Wall protectors, host cultural events, and establish a protection fund. Educational programs will also be carried out in schools and rural communities to raise public awareness of Great Wall conservation.
