The prefecture-level city of Datong – located in North China's Shanxi province – is hosting a vibrant array of cultural activities during the upcoming May Day holiday, in an entertaining program that is in line with its goal of boosting its international profile for cultural tourism.

Having kickstarted on April 16 and running through to May 5 – under the theme Spring in the Ancient Capital, Gathering in Datong – the city's program is presenting over 100 diverse events.

The festivities and visual features include the Datong Ancient City Lantern Festival, illuminating the city walls with colorful displays and processions like the Hua Mulan Parade.

Traditional martial arts performances at locations such as Guandi Temple Square are helping to showcase the city's rich and abundant cultural heritage.

Local opera exhibitions are featuring rare genres at the Guandi Temple Theater, while the Crabapple Blossom Festival is adding natural beauty to the celebrations.

An extravaganza called Datong Wonderland, taking place at the 14th century palace – now a tourist attraction, called the Prince Dai Residence – will provide immersive experiences, costume events and interactive games, blending entertainment with culture.

Additionally, cultural and artistic activities at the Datong Art Museum are offering workshops, exhibitions and screenings for fans of the arts.

Food festivals, flower exhibitions and rural experiences are complementing the exciting cultural agenda, providing a completely well-rounded celebration for residents and visitors alike.
