Datong, a city with millennia of cultural heritage, is blending its rich history with modern innovation to create a dynamic cultural tourism scene. As it aspires to become an internationally renowned destination, Datong stands out as a premier choice for travelers.
Between 2022 and 2024, the number of tourists visiting Datong nearly doubled, rising from 31.88 million to 62.29 million, while tourism revenue surged from 15.26 billion yuan ($2.16 billion) to 61.35 billion yuan.
The city's success is anchored in its iconic attractions, including the Yungang Grottoes, Mount Heng, Huayan Temple, and the ancient city walls, each drawing over a million visitors annually.
Datong's charm also extends to its ancient streets and alleys, where tradition and modernity intersect.
Supporting the flourishing industry are a number of policy initiatives aimed at boosting tourism and supporting local businesses. These efforts have spurred significant growth: Datong now boasts 13 large-scale cultural and entertainment enterprises, up from five; 37 A-level scenic spots, rising from 10; and six provincial-level tourist resorts, up from one.

This expansion has fostered a diverse "culture and tourism+" ecosystem, where various sectors thrive and complement one another. Visitors flock to Datong for educational experiences, skiing adventures, and immersive performances.
Enhancements to Datong's public cultural service system have further enriched the visitor experience. A comprehensive network of 10 county-level libraries, 10 cultural centers, and 126 township cultural stations benefits residents.
Cultural enrichment initiatives have nurtured 1,201 rural art troupes, 848 local cultural talents, and 1,562 village cultural leaders, organizing over 80,000 events that have reached 1.5 million people.
Infrastructure improvements also play a key role in enhancing the visitor experience. The scenic Great Wall No 1 Tourist Road now boasts 22 rest stops, 28 viewing platforms, and over 100 new or renovated tourist restrooms.
