Datong in Shanxi province kicked off its ice and snow season on Dec 27, marking the start of the 12th National Public Ice and Snow Season Shanxi Venue.

The event attracted nearly 300 skiers, including athletes from 21 provinces and over 40 cities, as well as international ice and snow sports fans.

Datong is renowned for its unique ice and snow resources, featuring excellent snow quality, extended snow seasons, and a variety of venues. These attributes provide a significant advantage in boosting the winter economy and enhancing the city's cultural and tourism brand.

The government has prioritized the development of the ice and snow economy as a key part of efforts to elevate cultural and tourism consumption, ensure dynamic off-peak seasons, and enrich the city's cultural heritage.

The initiative has integrated ice and snow sports with culture, tourism, wellness, and commerce, hosting major events, such as the provincial sports games and previous national ice and snow seasons.

Over 500,000 visitors came to Datong to participate in ice and snow activities in 2024.

The launch ceremony featured the simultaneous commencement of five major events, including the season's first public ski competition.

Authorities emphasized Datong's commitment to providing top-notch services, comprehensive facilities, and diverse experiences.
