At Mount Heng in Hunyuan county, Datong, a beam of light pierces the darkness, illuminating the cliff face with bright depictions of ancient battles.

The millennium-old outline of the Hanging Temple emerges from the darkness as part of a light show titled "Why Hanging Temple Endures".

The immersive performance, which debuted on May 18, is set against the mountain and temple. It sold 466,200 tickets and generated 66.45 million yuan ($9.93 million) from 305 performances.

The performance sees actors interacting directly with the audience, transforming spectators into historical participants. Techniques such as naked-eye 3D projections and dynamic effects vividly recreate the ancient architecture.

The show depicts the way ancient craftsmen suspended themselves in the air to carve and assemble the temple structures. It also incorporates local cultural elements such as astragalus cultivation and Mount Heng rituals.

The show has helped attract more nighttime visitors, boosting business for local accommodations and restaurants.
