Yaodu district

Linfen city and Linfen county were established in April 1937 and were merged into Linfen county in June 1949. They were re-established as separate entities under the administration of Linfen region in 1971. In October 1983, Linfen county was merged into Linfen city, remaining under Linfen region. On Nov 1, 2000, Linfen county-level city was renamed Yaodu district.

Yaodu district, historically known as Pingyang, boasts a long and rich history. Named after Emperor Yao, who established his capital here over 4,700 years ago, it is one of the key cradles of Chinese civilization. This land is steeped in cultural heritage and is regarded as the birthplace of many traditions, including Chinese characters, huabiao (ornamental columns), Go, poetry, opera, and drum music.

It has also been home to many historical figures, including Cangjie, the revered inventor of Chinese characters; Wei Qing, a renowned general from the Western Han Dynasty's (206 BC-AD 24) first westward campaign; and Faxian, China's first monk to travel abroad for Buddhist scriptures.

Yaodu is rich in tourist resources, with over 50 historical and cultural sites such as Yao Temple, Yao's Residence, Yao's Mausoleum, and Dayun Temple, as well as more than 10 natural attractions, including Xiandonggou, celebrated as the largest karst canyon in North China.
